Carlos Rivera-Serrano, MD is a US trained plastic & reconstructive surgeon with additional advanced training in Asia and Europe. He trained in Plastic Surgery at the University of Florida and then completed fellowships in some of the most widely recognized and sought after plastic surgery centers in the world.
Dr. Rivera-Serrano was born in Colombia, where he completed medical school among the top 3 of his class and was awarded several scholarships for his academic achievements. His high academic performance prior to graduation granted him an exchange-scholarship to Harvard Medical School and conceded him to rotate at Mount Sinai School of Medicine as a senior medical student, where he was graded with Honors in five of seven clinical rotations.
After moving to the United States, he first completed a surgical internship at the coveted Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He then completed a residency in Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, ranked as the second best program in the nation by U.S. News & World Report the year of his graduation. During his time in Pittsburgh, for four consecutive years he won the “Isamu Sando” Temporal Bone Dissection Contest, was a representative to the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery (AAOHNS), and received several AAOHNS Resident Leadership Awards.
Following his passion, he decided to train in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, graduating from the University of Florida. To further refine his skills, he then completed a one year clinical fellowship in Craniofacial Surgery / Reconstructive Microsurgery at the world-renowned Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan, arguably the leading and prime plastic surgery center in Asia. During his time in Taiwan, Dr. Rivera-Serrano was also the Noordhoff Craniofacial Foundation Fellow, operating on several children and adults with craniofacial congenital anomalies. Lastly, he did a clinical Reconstructive Microsurgery Fellowship at Gent University Hospital in Belgium, widely regarded as one of the premier plastic surgery programs in Europe, focusing on complex microvascular breast reconstruction and perforator flaps (free tissue transfer or “free flaps”). Both in Taiwan and Belgium, he worked under global pioneers of plastic surgery techniques including Prof. Dr. Yu-Ray Chen in facial skeletal surgery and Prof. Dr. Phillip Blondeel with DIEP and perforator flaps, among many others.
Dr. Rivera-Serrano was recruited to the beautiful college town of Carbondale, IL to develop the reconstructive microsurgery program, focusing on breast and head & neck reconstruction, and to further expand the facial and cosmetic surgery services. His main interests are reconstructive and cosmetic facial and breast surgery, including nasal, eyelid and facelift surgery, and body contouring. Dr. Rivera-Serrano world-class training background set his expectations to deliver state-of-the-art plastic surgery services.
Dr. Rivera-Serrano has done extensive clinical research and has written over 30 peer reviewed publications and chapters in leading journals and books including, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Journal of Craniofacial Surgery, Journal of Reconstructive Microsurgery, The Laryngoscope, and Bailey’s Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery. He has given over 40 presentations at regional, national and international meetings and is board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology.
